The Harlan County High School Academic Team competes in the JV Challenge as well as the District, Regional, and State Governor's Cup Competitions. The team is composed of students from grades 9-12 that wish to compete. They compete in a wide variety of subjects including Language Arts, Arts & Humanities, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Composition, and Future Problem Solving.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, the HCHS Team placed first overall in the District Governor's Cup Competition and placed fourth in the Regional Governor's Cup Competition. Seven students who competed at the regional competition advanced to the KAAC State Academic Competition held in Louisville, KY this year. These students were Autumn Dunaway, Jared Lewis, Edmund Dye, Breanna Epperson, Chelsey Caldwell, Jordan Blevins, and Kaylee Major.
